shockwave

Shockwave therapy is a safe and effective treatment to reduce pain and accelerate tissue healing. Typical treatments last 5 minutes per area, in this time we typically deliver around 2500 pulses. Most conditions require multiple treatments spaced several days apart to allow your body to heal in between sessions. During your initial assessment the clinician will evaluation your specific condition to estimate how many treatments you will need. The average treatment plan is 6 visits.

How does it work?

A small metal tube (projectile) is accelerated inside the handpiece using electro-magnetic propulsion until it impacts the stop plate. This collision generates a mechanical pressure wave that transfers that energy through your body. This energy can be loud and uncomfortable, but ultimately stimulates a healing response. Shockwave therapeutic effects are attributed to increased cellular activity, new blood vessels, connective tissue and nerve remodeling.

What can shockwave treat?

There is evidence that shockwave therapy is effective for many common physical complaints, including but not limited to:

  1. Plantar fasciitis
  2. Tennis Elbow
  3. Shoulder calcific tendinitis
  4. Achilles Tendinopathy
  5. Patellar tendinitis
  6. Myofascial Pain Syndrome
  7. Osteoarthritis of the knee
  8. Non-specific lower back pain

Does it hurt?

Treatments on soft tissue areas generally cause less discomfort than on boney regions. The first session might be slightly uncomfortable, but it becomes easier with each subsequent treatment. If necessary, the machine's settings can be adjusted to reduce any discomfort.

After treatment care:

Avoid using ice or anti-inflammatory drugs, as they may hinder your body's healing process. You might experience mild discomfort, redness, or bruising a few hours after the treatment, potentially lasting up to 5 days, although this is rare. Despite feeling better, it's advisable to limit your vigorous activity for 24 hours post-treatment.
